How to Make Your Home Feel Cosy for Autumn: 7 Simple Ideas

here’s something about the first signs of autumn that makes us want to retreat indoors and make home feel that little bit cosier.

The evenings gradually become darker, the temperature starts to drop and suddenly candles, blankets and beautiful fragrances begin to feel very appealing again.

The good news is that creating a cosy autumn home doesn’t mean completely redecorating. A few small changes can completely transform how a room looks, feels and smells.

Here are seven simple ways to start bringing that cosy autumn feeling into your home.

1. Start with fragrance

Scent is one of the quickest ways to change the atmosphere of a room.

During summer, we naturally gravitate towards lighter, fresher fragrances. As autumn arrives, richer and warmer fragrance notes begin to come into their own.

Think woods, amber, vanilla, spice, musk and deeper fruit notes.

Wax melts are perfect when you want to change your home fragrance regularly, while reed diffusers provide a more constant background scent throughout the day.

You can also use room mists when you want an instant burst of fragrance or diffuser oils when you want to create different moods around the house.

Homaroma tip: Try layering fragrance throughout your home rather than using one product everywhere. A reed diffuser in the hallway, wax melts in the living room and a room mist in the bedroom can create a beautifully fragranced home without every room feeling identical.

2. Change your lighting

You don't need to redecorate a room to make it feel different.

Changing bright overhead lighting for smaller lamps and warm pools of light can instantly make a space feel more inviting as the evenings get darker.

Candles are another lovely addition. As well as fragrance, the gentle flicker of candlelight adds warmth and creates the kind of atmosphere we naturally associate with cosy autumn evenings.

3. Bring back the blankets

This might be the easiest autumn update of them all.

Bring throws and blankets back into your living room and bedrooms and leave them somewhere they're actually going to be used.

Layering different textures can make even a very neutral room immediately feel warmer and more comfortable.

And, of course, there's nothing quite like curling up under a blanket when the weather outside isn't behaving itself.

4. Introduce warmer colours

You don't need to paint the walls orange to embrace autumn.

Small touches of warmer colour are often enough.

Rust, caramel, chocolate brown, burgundy, deep green and warm neutral shades can all introduce an autumnal feeling without taking over the room.

Try changing cushion covers, adding a throw, introducing dried flowers or simply styling a few seasonal accessories together.

5. Make the hallway smell amazing

We often concentrate on our living rooms when choosing home fragrance, but the hallway is one of the most important places to fragrance.

It's the first thing you experience when you walk through the door — and the first impression guests get of your home.

A reed diffuser works particularly well here because it quietly fragrances the space throughout the day.

There is something rather lovely about opening the front door and immediately thinking, my house smells amazing.

6. Create an evening ritual

Autumn is the perfect time to slow things down a little in the evening.

It doesn't have to be anything elaborate.

Tidy the kitchen, switch off the big lights, put on a wax melt or light a candle, make your favourite drink and give yourself half an hour to properly settle down.

These tiny rituals are often what make home feel like somewhere we genuinely look forward to coming back to.

7. Give your home a seasonal reset

Before we reach the really cold months, early autumn is a great opportunity for a mini home reset.

Open the windows while the weather still allows it, wash blankets and cushion covers, clear away some of the summer clutter and give frequently used rooms a good clean.

Then bring the cosy elements back in.

Fresh, clean rooms combined with beautiful home fragrance can make your whole house feel different without buying lots of new things.

Finding your autumn home fragrance

There isn't one fragrance that defines autumn.

Some people immediately reach for warming spice and vanilla, while others prefer sophisticated woody, amber or musky fragrances. And if you're not ready to say goodbye to fresh fragrances just yet, you don't have to.

The best home fragrance is ultimately the one that makes you happy when you walk into the room.

At Homaroma, you'll find home fragrance in everything from wax melts and diffuser oils to reed diffusers, room mists and candles, making it easy to find the format — and fragrance — that works for your home.

And with a new season just around the corner, there may be a few more reasons to make your home feel cosy very soon…
